Calm down: Gamestop’s Girls Night In Page Not As Bad as Some Think

Some of the popular Nintendo blogs out there are having themselves a real hissy-fit over Gamestop's "Madden 09 Girls Night In" page. I popped on over, expecting to see coupons for Cooking Mama and Petz for the ladies to use while their men played "real games."

Imagine my surprise when the page turned out to be all about getting girls to play Madden! And it really isn't condescending either- they don't talk down to them, and other than a silly line about "the team with the cutest quarterback," there just isn't a whole lot on the site that strikes me as so horrible.

So what if it has recipes for a Madden Party? Wouldn't a page about having a Madden party for guys also have snack food recipes? Sure, there is a "Football 101" section, but its just a link to a bunch of football vocabulary. I suppose you could take issue with the fact they pitch to women at all, and you could make a case that maybe they should just assume that girls play Madden. Yet I only see that as a moderate annoyance, sort of like how everyone assume young men just want to play shooters, sports games and racing games.

Sorry Nintendo blogosphere, I just can't see how this is making Susan B. Anthony turn in her grave.
