EGM's Crispin Boyer's a Clown
Filed in archive News on January 27, 2008

Here is yet another example of the bias running rampant against Nintendo in the print media. EGM magazine, instead of actually reviewing "Endless Ocean," decides to rip it, for being a "non-game."
An excerpt, courtesy of Gonintendo.com:
Why isn't it a game?
Endless Ocean gives you a Sailboat and a stretch of the South Pacific to explore at 10 fathoms. What it doesn't give you is danger, conflict, enemies, a story, obstacles a health bar, bosses... you know, game stuff. You don't even have to worry about your air supply. Ever tried diving without an air guage? Diving's a supersafe sport, but if you don't follow a few simple rules, you could rupture your lungs or catch agonizing decompression sickness or just drift into a happy warm funk until you run out of air. I'm not saying EO needs to give players the bends, but it'd be nice if the occasional fish at least tried to eat you.
First, he is wrong on the air gauge. Gonintendo is reporting that there is in fact one in the game. This should tell you how thoroughly this dude "reviewed" Endless Ocean.
No score was given to the game. Instead, this smart alecky blurb:
Your goal here ultimately is to catalog as many fish as you can get in petting distance, stopping along the way to give dive tours to tourists who want in on the hot fin-petting action. And if that sounds more like work than a game, then bingo - That's why EO kicks off our inaugural installment of Electronic Nongaming Monthly.
If I were to rate Endless Ocean on a scale between Biology Class and a night dive in the actual ocean, I'd give it 'trip to Walmart's aquarium isle'. - Crispin Boyer
I'm sure real consumers, as opposed to the core gamer posers that probably subscribe to EGM, would be interested to know the merits of the title, instead of this trash article. Is it educational? Is it enjoyable? Is it worth the $30 budget price? Any information of that sort would have been preferable to this screed.

It just sucks that, in the however-many-years we gamers spent hanging in there as our industry built credibility as a medium that can produce unique and exciting experiences, that those of us who sneaked into having the loudest voices in mainstream reviewing have to be so incredibly one-dimensional. It's one thing if the game isn't your cup of tea, that's fine... it's just pretty appalling that someone working for a large industry publication wouldn't even hint toward EO's significance in the larger picture of gaming, practically belittling gamers who might actually enjoy the title. I'm glad EGM hires writers from the whatever middle school happens to be convenient for them to pull from.

Right on J.B. This goes in the "bad game journalism hall of shame" with Game Informer's "we only use Wii Sports to play frisbee with" and the whole Kane and Lynch Gamespot debacle.
This guy's non-review would be like someone who hated football reviewing Madden. It's patently unfair to the game, and moreso to the consumers whom EGM is trying to inform. Instead of inform, it seems EGM wishes to brainwash their readers... which is fine, if Crispin wrote an actual opinion piece, instead of a phony review.

Rob, I think you might have gone a little far on this one. You almost nailed it in your final statement too. EGM is clearly for hard-core gamers. Which is me, and frankly its you too. I know the games you play. You and I don't give a crap about EO. it is a fish petting "game." I would have preferred they not even wasted the space on the article at all, because its not a title that the vast majority of the magazine's readers care about.

There are just some games that a magazine like EGM just does not review. Games like "The Olson Twin's Super Fun Pony Adventure: Mystery at Old Man McAngry's House"
If they felt the same way about that game as they do about Endless Ocean then no review was necessary.

Well, I'm not quite so easy to stereotype. I bought Nintendogs. Two copies actually, to get two of the breeds I liked. I tried Brain Age and loved it. To a smaller degree games like Phoenix Wright fit into this discussion, because although they are still an actual game because there are goals, they are more or less interactive comics or novels.
I DO give a crap about Endless Ocean! If I didn't give a crap about it, I wouldn't have bothered to post! It is definitely something I want to try, especially at $30.... though my gaming budget is of course limmited to.... what I make writing this blog (-:
