Nintendo Sells Out – Kinda

Ready to see some impressive numbers? A recent press release from Nintendo showers us in an avalanche of figures with lots of zeroes at the end. In the month of November, 3.9 million video gaming systems were sold in North America. That includes all new and old systems and handhelds from every video game hardware manufacturer. Guess how many of those Nintendo can claim? 2.1 million, meaning Nintendo's console sales account for 55% of the video game systems sold in the month of November.

And the fun doesn't stop there. Take a look at some of the other numbers released by the video gaming giant:

  • In the first week of availability, the Wii sold just under 500,000 units in the United States. That's around 70,000 systems a day.

  • 87% of the Wii buyers also picked up The legend of zelda: Twilight Princess, pushing 412,000 copies off store shelves. That's the highest sales rate for any launch game since Super Mario 64 released with the Nintendo 64 over ten years ago.
  • The Nintendo DS continues to perform well in stores, pushing an estimated 920,000 units in November alone.
  • The Game Boy Advance is still alive and kicking and sold 640,000 systems in November.
  • Wii buyers bought an average of two additional games with their system (not counting Wii Sports). The industry average is one game with a new console.
