Pokemon trading across language barriers a bit unbalanced
Filed in archive News on April 29, 2007
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS each have a pokemon-swapping feature accessible on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, allowing anyone to go online and trade critters with friends from around the world. With the North American launch of the games, Japanese players have found a way to get pokemon with English into their collection. Normally it would be impossible to name a Pokemon using the Roman alphabet on the Japanese version of the game, so as a result, common monsters such as Magikarp are being traded for much more powerful (and rare) creatures. In other words, if you own these games, start swapping with our friends across the sea. NOW.

I scored some great deals this way on the first few days the game was out -- sometimes getting Pokemon 40 or 50 levels more powerful than my trade offer. It seems, though, that as more Americans get the game that the market has been settling down.
