Nintendo DS

Casual puzzle gamers, meet the hardcorest of hardcore gamers, RPG fans. Infinite Interactive, the developers of the Warlords series on the PC, are forging into new territory with Puzzle Quest DS, a game that combines bejeweled-like tile matching with character development, battles with enemies, and maybe even spiky haired heroes. 4 Color Rebellion has a lengthy interview with the developer that sheds some light on the quirky-sounding game.

The combination of the highly addictive instant gratification casual puzzle formula with the longer-lasting but satisfying in the end RPG genre makes a lot of sense. You hook players with easy gameplay but they stick around to see it through. All of that adds up to a wide market base, tons of units sold, and customers loyal enough to pick up a sequel. But will it work? If the recent success of Bookworm Adventures, a game with a similar formula, is any indication, Puzzle Quest DS could be in for a landslide. The good kind of landslide, like with chocolate or marshmallows.
