Reggie: Wii Fit Dropping May 19th, "Less Than $100"
Sales will be "THIS BIG!" (Image from IGN.com)
I'm excited for Wii Fit. For one, I'm a fattie, I need every tool in the arsenal to fight that. Two, the potential for future games is huge, especially since you can combine the motion controls of the Wii Remote and nunchuck with the balance board… wow.
Which brings us to the latest Reggie Files-Aime interview with IGN. In it, the Nintendo president talks about 10 titles being in development for the Wii Fit balance board outside of the packed in software. That sounds good to me.
The game also creates a channel on your Wii's menu screen, which tracks your progress, such as BMI.
So far Wii Fit has sold 1.2 million in Japan. That's amazing considering that you are talking about an $83 package with a large peripheral. Nintendo is shipping a million of these in America, expecting the same results. Will they get it? I think so. Of course to deny Nintendo at this point is almost impossible, but you know they are going to get a massive wave of mainstream media support, from your local 6 'O Clock news to national morning shows.
The most interesting thing to me is that Nintendo sees Wii Fit as "the sequel" to Wii Sports, the next title that will sustain its new found casual fans. It'll be interesting to see if that holds true, and if any of those fans can be converted to other games, and what those are.

I really do hope people decide to pick up Wii Fit… I’m think that they will. The thing that worries me the most is that, while the Wii has had these massive sales, you’ll sometimes talk to a new person who has been brought into the gaming fold by the Wii, and leave with the impression that they don’t know that you can play anything other than Wii Sports on it
I’m sure that’s a little drastic, but maybe Wii Fit is just what Nintendo needs to get the new gamers back into the stores!
Speaking of that, Wii Fit preorders at Gamestop actually opened up this past Saturday… I think it’s a $10 preorder. Have fun!

You know, my family was a big “fail” when it came to actually getting a Wii. I think they enjoyed playing mine a bit, but it didn’t light a fire under them. My sister likes it, be she was already a gamer- sort of in the “nintendogs” and “Mario Party” arena, but a regular gamer none-the-less.
My hope with Wii is that even if a very small percentage of these new customers “convert” to other types of games, that this will be enough in pure numbers to support Nintendo throughout this generation.
