Rob's Rants: More thoughts on Wii and what is is and is not
Filed in archive Wii by Robert Howard on June 17, 2008

I've been chewing this over for a little while now.
I think the deal with Wii is that a subset of people desperately want the system to magically change into a different experience.
We see this manifested with the Capcom Spyborgs fiasco. Here's a fresh game being developed by a all-star new development team (people from Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank, among others), but because it isn't 100% obviously hardcore (it has a cartoon like art style) fans go absolutely batcrap insane. Christian Svensson of Capcom has to go put out fires on forums. Frankly, it is embarassing- people claim to have somehow played a non-released game and can say without a doubt that the game is terrible.
At this point, here's some opinions I have about Wii, as a Wii owner and supporter from the start:
1. The technology has certain limitations.
I don't think we'll see realistic sword play, maybe a fun Approximation
(already done in games like Dragon Quest Swords), but not completely real fighting. 2. We won't get ports of the really big time "core" games on other systems.
We need to stop complaining (we being the general internet) about games like Street Fighter IV not being ported over to Wii. Frankly, it doesn't make economic sense for Capcom to try to spend time downscaling a game when it is HIGHLY likely that those interested in a game like that (or any number of graphics intense games) probably own a Xbox 360 or PS3 anyway.
What I do support, however, is unique gaming experiences, exclusive for Wii, being made with popular intellectual properties, like Capcom has done with Resident Evil.
3. The Wii will be defined by traditional Nintendo offerings, Nintendo's innovative new "Blue Ocean" products, and a few third party surprises.
Wii fans should complain about third party support. Yet it seems clear to me now that so few people in the gaming industry understand Nintendo's unique vision that I think the Wii, at least this version of it, is going to be light on highly impactful third party games. That isn't to say we won't get good third party games, but this is not what defines the system and is not why you get the system. Personally, after trying Wii Fit for the first time yesterday (very exciting, very impressive product and experience), I'm excited by the innovation that will come in the next few years, and this is why I own a Wii.
4. Any decent third party support is going to be in 2009 and beyond.
This is an old opinion but I still hold to it. I think the industry was caught by surprise and is still scratching their collective heads. Some might even be waiting for the fad to go away- especially makers of graphics intense middleware like Epic (though Red Steel was using a scaled down Unreal Engine).
I like what Capcom is doing. They might be the one company that has really approached Wii with intelligence while not completely pandering to the casual gamer like Ubisoft has (who is making money on their Wii games, but must everything be Petz?).
5. The problem with "core" gaming on Wii is that it doesn't need it.
Here's the deal: if the marketplace were more competitive, that is, if Nintendo were in second place, then you'd see Nintendo emphasize core gaming. But it isn't, it is in first place and even peripherals are sold out. It is nothing short of astounding.
However, to a lesser degree, Sony and Microsoft may, *may* not need the Blue Ocean people either. I've read some analysts point out that *every console is selling well*, but the Wii is selling *super* well. The whole industry is humming along very well in this respect.
So, in conclusion, I am happy with the Wii offering totally different experiences than my 360 and...... the PS3 I am going to buy very soon (-: A console cannot be all things to all people. If you can only afford one console, maybe you can stand to be more irritated at Nintendo and the third party support; but again, it isn't as if there isn't any core experiences on Wii, there is, but this is not what makes Wii special.
