For the generation that grew up with both Space Invaders and techno, the latest Taito offering for the DS may well be profoundly appealing. Space Invaders Extreme, coming to a Japanese DS near you very soon, promises to fuse classic gameplay with the kind of psychotronic synced-to-the-music sensory experience suppled by games like PS2 classic Rez.

Eschewing previous efforts to drag Space Invaders into the realms of hideous pseudo-3D monstrosity, Taito have instead opted to build on its compelling, hypnotic qualities, keeping the visuals oldskool. J C Fletcher reports that:

In fact, Extreme looks pretty cool, and not just in its presentation. The movement of the Invaders is now tied into the game soundtrack (another nod to Rez), adding a new element to the already-hypnotic Invaders experience."
