The Rise in Popularity of Nintendo Wii Games

In the mid to late '80s, video games made an entrance into the gaming world. Gaming systems changed and would never be the same. Arcade video games, such as PacMan, were popular then. Video game units were large, and players could only find them in pizza parlors or gamerooms, which were full of teenagers instantly attracted to the games with their bright lights, funny music and noises, and the chance to be the "top scorer" on any video game.

Gaming grew and evolved over the next twenty years. Programmers began developing games that were much more advanced and had more sophisticated digital features, which increased their appeal. Soon after the arcade and PacMan period, hand-held video games with joysticks became popular. The joystick was a literal stick that pointed up out of the base unit that you held in your hand. It connected to the gaming console. With this new development, people could enjoy their favorite video games in their own homes and in front of their own personal display tubes–their televisions. This set the stage for the introduction of even more advanced technology, which would continue to impress consumers considerably.

It wasn't too long after these hand-held and arcade games had dominated the gaming world that other systems like Nintendo Wii became immensely popular. When Nintendo introduced the Wii gaming system to consumers in the early part of 2000, stores had waiting lists for months just for customers to be able to purchase the unit. There was such a demand for the Nintendo Wii games and console that online shops and individuals could sell them for two to three times the value, and customers would gladly pay those costs to get one.

Although much of the frantic buying frenzy seemed to die down after a few years, the Wii is still a highly popular system that is still selling out in retail stores everywhere.
