Wii Review Roundup: Part 2

Today in our roundup of recently released Wii games, let's take a look at two titles that make me want to grab a fistful of quarters: Geometry Wars: Galaxies, and Soulcalibur Legends.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is of course the Wii version of the very popular Xbox 360 game. The issue with many gamers is how do you justify selling a game that was $5 for $50? Apparently Sierra and Kuju Entertainment did a great job fleshing out the game, because it is critically well received, averaging a solid 79, with a high of 90 and a low of 60.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is a game for the old school hardcore gamer that loves to push himself to the limits. It is a game that is best served in short doses, but each dosage is an incredible experience of psychedelic gameplay that is both frenetic and engaging.

This fell outside of this blogger's "gifts to himself list," but would be a welcome addition to his library, if ANYONE out there that gives this blogger gifts is listening…..

Soulcalibur: Legends attempts to do something that has only really been done by one other game: D3 Publisher's decent budget title "Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire." That "thing" being a traditional brawler. Yes, Namco has decided against the usual Soulcalibur format in favor of a 3D brawler game using the Wii remote. Many were looking forward to this title. How does it fare?

Well, like many Wii titles, it boasts an absurd spread on Metacritic. As of now it has a mediocre 53 metascore, but it has a high of 80 (cheat code central) and a low of 16 from Gamerevolution.

Here's the take from ZTGameDomain (who gave a grade of 70):

While it doesn't do anything criminal it also fails to do more than coast by on its laurels. The motion controls work better than any other game of this type and the visuals, while not stunning, are technically proficient and impressive.

All in all, if you enjoyed Dragon Blade, this might be a good buy for you. It does have local co-op, so a rental when a friend comes over might be a good idea too. One thing I do agree with, though, is that this is probably a "consolation prize," while the other systems get the "real" Soulcalibur later in 2008, and that's too bad.
